School Notes |
The Jackson
Hole Nordic Center offers instruction and rentals of cross-country
gear along with tours into Grand Teton National Park. A
Nordic skier can glide along the base of the Tetons or skate
on a network of 17 kilometers of groomed trails. Telemark
gear and lessons are also available on the mountain and
an instructor can take visitors into the neighboring back-country
powder bowls. Naturalist guided full and half day tours
are available. Skiers may exchange Alpine lift ticket for
a free Nordic trail pass on the same day as purchase. |
| Getting
There |
Jackson
Hole is located in western Wyoming near the Idaho border
and about 40 miles south of Yellowstone National Park. The
resort is twelve miles from the town of Jackson (the development
at the base area is called Teton Village) and 250 miles
north of Salt Lake City, Utah. |
| Area
Information
|
There can
be few more spectacular settings for a mountain resort than
Wyoming's Jackson Hole, with the Teton mountains towering
above. As thrilling as the view is, it only gets better
when you and 62 other lucky souls board the aerial tram
for the 12 minute ride to the top of Rendezvous Mountain.
Unlike most
North American resorts, Jackson Hole is ready-made for free
skiing. Trails have little meaning in the expanse of the
resort's upper reaches. In this setting, skills count --
the high terrain at Jackson is best suited to advanced and
expert skiers. Recent lift additions provide better access
to the gentler slopes on the lower half of the mountain.
Because Jackson's
base elevation is relatively low for the Rocky Mountains
(6,311 feet, 1,924 meters), snow quality on the lower half
of the mountain can be a problem. One solution is to spend
a day or two at Grand Targhee, on the other side of the
Teton mountain range.
Some lonely
French-Canadian fur trappers named the Grand Tetons for
their likeness to big breasts. Jackson Hole was originally
named Jackson's Hole for Davey Jackson, a mountain man who
trapped in the area during the late 1800's. "Hole" was a
term used in that day to describe a high mountain valley.
A new high
speed quad increases the uphill capacity on Apres Vous from
810 to 2000 people per hour and reduces the time it takes
to reach the summit by half, from 10 minutes to five.
The backcountry
terrain in Grand Teton National Park and Bridger Teton National
Forest is some of the most spectacular and challenging terrain
found anywhere in the United States. This winter, the Resort
will keep the gates accessing the backcountry open to the
general public throughout the winter season, adding another
2,500 acres of terrain.
Jackson Hole
was named by the fur trappers and mountain men who inhabited
this area in the early 1800's. A hole was the name for a
high valley amid mountain ranges, and the valley here was
trapper Davey Jackson's territory, hence it was originally
named Jackson's Hole, and then later shortened to Jackson
Hole. The town is called Jackson, while Jackson Hole is
the name of the entire valley beginning at the south entrance
of Yellowstone and running 60 miles south through Grand
Teton National Park. Grand Teton National Park was created
in 1929, and then greatly expanded in 1950 due to the determined
efforts of John D. Rockefeller, who bought and then donated
a great deal of the land that is under protection today.
As the fame of this beautiful area grew, tourism gradually
supplanted cattle ranching as the valley's economic base.
Early residents built one of the first ski tows in the U.S.
in 1939 on Snow King Mountain in town. In 1965, the Jackson
Hole Ski Area in Teton Village opened, offering full resort
facilities and some of America's best skiing terrain. Then,
in 1969, Grand Targhee Ski Resort began operations on the
western slope of the Tetons near the small community of
Alta, Wyoming. The development of these three areas helped
establish Jackson Hole as a world-renowned skiing center,
as well as an unrivaled all-season recreational resort area.
Jackson is the seat of Teton County and is its only incorporated
town. While most of the community lives in the Jackson Hole
area, a small percentage live in Alta. What is truly unique
about Jackson Hole is that it is part of the largest undeveloped
natural ecosystem in the temperate zones of the earth. Limited
development has preserved the scenic beauty and wild lands
which are home to an abundant array of wildlife. In fact,
less than 3% of Teton County is privately owned; the other
97% is contained within Grand Teton National Park, the Bridger-Teton
National Forest (the largest in the lower 48 states), and
the National Elk Refuge. Jackson Hole Ski Resort has the
greatest continuous vertical rise in the United States at
4,139 feet. Jackson Hole is also home to many accomplished
ski ambassadors including Olympic Gold and Silver medallist
Tommy Moe, Olympic Gold, Silver and Bronze medallist Pepi
Stiegler, and two-time World Extreme Champion Doug Coombs.
Stiegler and Coombs are also available for private lessons
or small, private group lessons through the Jackson Hole
Ski School. Jackson Hole has ski runs suitable for skiers
of all abilities. Beginners and intermediates will find
plenty of terrain to suit their needs. Experts will be challenged
by the 10,450-foot Rendezvous Peak that has a myriad of
terrain and snow to offer.
